Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake pre-start checks, operate and shut down two wheel motorbikes.

The unit applies to individuals who operate two wheel motorbikes to undertake routine work under general supervision with limited autonomy and accountability.

Vehicle must be operated according to relevant state/territory licensing authority vehicle license requirements and regulations.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare a two wheeled motorbike for operation

• Confirm with supervisor activity to be undertaken and that the vehicle is fit for purpose
• Identify potential hazards and risks to self and implement safe working practices to manage risks
• Conduct routine pre-operational checks on two wheel motorbike according to operators manual and report faults or malfunctions to supervisor for repair
• Select and maintain personal protective equipment according to workplace safety requirements
• Use and fit personal protective equipment, including helmet that is fit for purpose
• Select two wheel motorbike according to rider’s size, skill level and task to be completed
• Ensure any items that are to be transported on the two wheel motorbike are safely secured
• Identify and confirm areas and applications excluded to two wheel motorbike operation on the workplace safety plan

2. Operate a two wheeled motorbike

• Start up, steer, maneuver, position and stop two wheel motorbike in a controlled manner
• Comply with legislation and workplace safety plan in regard to carrying passengers
• Identify environmental and biosecurity implications associated with two wheel motorbike operation and minimise impact
• Identify situations where two wheel motorbike good riding techniques are required
• Apply two wheel motorbike good riding techniques to pre-position the body to assist bike stability
• Identify and avoid riding surfaces, terrain and slopes that are dangerous to safe operation
• Operate and maneuver over a variety of surfaces, slopes and terrain to minimise risk to safety
• Modify two wheel motorbike operation according to local weather conditions

3. Conduct shut down procedures

• Shut down two wheel motorbike
• Identify and report malfunctions, faults, irregular performance or damage to supervisor
• Store and secure two wheel motorbike
• Remove and store keys in the required location
• Unload, load and secure motorbike safely

Course Description

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck safely in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a HRWL license to operate this plant.

Forklift truck means a powered industrial truck equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other attachments that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground, but does not include a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck.

A person performing this work is required to hold a forklift truck High Risk Work License (HRWL).

This unit requires a person operating a forklift truck to:

plan for the work/task
prepare for the work/task
perform work/task
pack up

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan work/task

• Task requirements are identified from work orders or equivalent and confirmed with relevant people and site inspection is conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
• Work area operating surface is assessed to determine suitability for operational use of forklift truck in accordance with workplace procedures
• Suitability of forklift truck and attachment working load limit (WLL) is determined for the load/s and work/task requirements in accordance with manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures
• Working area is inspected and appropriate paths for operating the forklift truck and moving and placing load/s in work area are assessed and managed in accordance with workplace procedures
• Hazard and risk control measures are identified and reported to relevant person/s in accordance with workplace procedures
• Traffic management plan implementation is confirmed in accordance with workplace procedures
• Appropriate communication procedures are identified with relevant people in accordance with workplace procedures
• All work is confirmed to ensure coverage of work/task requirements for the relevant work area is in accordance with workplace procedures

2. Prepare for work/task

• Consultation with workplace person/s is maintained to ensure work plan is clear and consistent with site requirements in accordance with safe work procedures
• Weather and work environmental conditions are assessed to determine any impact on forklift truck operations in accordance with manufacturer requirements and safe work procedures
• Risk control measures for hazards identified are checked for implementation in accordance with safe work procedures
• Forklift truck is accessed in a safe manner in accordance with manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures
• Forklift truck logbook is checked in accordance with manufacturer, regulatory requirements and safe work procedures
• Pre-start checks are carried out and any damage and defects are reported, recorded and appropriate action is taken in accordance with safe work procedures and manufacturer requirements
• Forklift truck is set up correctly with any relevant attachments as per work plan in accordance with relevant manufacturer requirements including data plate and safe work procedures
• Operational checks are carried out and any damage and defects are reported, recorded and appropriate action is taken in accordance with manufacturer requirements and safe work procedures
• Hazard and risk control measures are checked for implementation and communicated to people in the work area in accordance with safe work procedures

3. Perform work/task 

• Weight and positioning of load is assessed to ensure compliance with forklift truck data plate requirements and in accordance with safe work procedures
• Forklift truck is operated safely in accordance with manufacturer requirements and safe work procedures
• Loads are monitored constantly when lifting, moving, lowering and placing to ensure stability of load and avoidance of hazards in accordance with safe work procedures
• Unplanned and unsafe situations are responded to in accordance with safe work procedures
• Loads are picked up, transported and placed using all forklift truck movements in accordance with safe work procedures
• Forklift truck is parked, switched off and isolated appropriately in accordance with manufacturer requirements and safe work procedures

4. Pack Up

• Forklift truck shutdown procedures are carried out in accordance with manufacturer requirements and safe work procedures
• Forklift truck is secured to prevent unauthorized access/use in accordance with safe work procedures

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type Elevating Work Platform (EWP) where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate this plant.

Boom-type elevating work platform means a telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device, or any combination of these, used to support a platform on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated.

A person performing this work is required to hold a boom-type elevating work platform HRWL.

This unit requires a person operating an EWP to:

• plan for the work/task
• prepare for the work/task
• perform work/task
• pack up.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

Legislative and regulatory requirements are applicable to this unit of competency.

This unit is based on the licensing requirements of Part 4.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations and meets Commonwealth, State and Territory HRWL requirements.

The National Assessment Instrument (NAI) is the mandated assessment for the HRWL to operate the relevant licencing class as detailed in this unit.

Course Description

The unit applies to individuals who operate side by side utility vehicles to undertake routine work under general supervision with limited autonomy and accountability.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare side by side utility vehicle for use

• Confirm with supervisor activity to be undertaken, including identifying potential hazards and risks and implementing safe working practices to manage risks
• Conduct routine pre-operational checks on the vehicle according to operators manual and report faults or malfunctions for repair
• Select and maintain personal protective equipment according to workplace safety requirements
• Use, wear and correctly fit personal protective equipment including helmets that are fit for purpose according to operators manual
• Attach equipment and loads that do not exceed the weight limitations of the vehicle
• Secure loads to ensure safe transport

2. Operate side by side utility vehicle

• Start up, steer, maneuver, position and stop side by side utility vehicle in a controlled manner
• Identify environmental and biosecurity implications associated with side by side utility vehicle operation and minimise impact of vehicle use
• Apply side by side utility vehicle driver skills
• Operate side by side utility vehicles in accordance with task requirements, conditions and operators manual
• Identify and avoid riding surfaces, terrains and slopes that are dangerous to safe operation
• Operate and maneuver over a variety of surfaces, slopes and terrain to minimise risk to safety
• Modify side by side utility vehicle operation according to local weather conditions
• Ensure that vehicle seat belts and other safety features are functional and correctly fitted

3. Complete side by side utility vehicle operation

• Shut down side by side utility vehicle
• Identify and report malfunctions, faults, irregular performance or damage to supervisor
• Park and secure side by side utility vehicle
• Remove and store keys in the required location
• Unload, load and secure side by side utility vehicle safely
• Maintain vehicle use records for servicing purposes in line with workplace practices

Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate quad bikes including undertaking pre-start checks and shut down procedures.

The unit applies to individuals who operate quad bikes to undertake routine work under general supervision with limited autonomy and accountability.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare a quad bike for operation

• Confirm with supervisor activity to be undertaken and that the vehicle is fit for purpose
• Identify potential hazards and risks and implement safe working practices to manage risks
• Select and maintain personal protective equipment according to workplace safety requirements
• Use, wear and correctly fit personal protective equipment including quad bike helmet that is fit for purpose
• Conduct routine pre-operational checks on quad bike according to operation and maintenance manual and report faults or malfunctions to supervisor
• Identify and confirm no go areas with supervisor according to workplace safety plan
• Identify quad bike applications, loads and fixed attachments according to operation and maintenance manual

2. Operate a quad bike

• Start up, steer, maneuver, position and stop quad bike in a controlled manner
• Identify environmental and any biosecurity implications associated with quad bike operation and minimise impact
• Identify situations where quad bike active riding techniques are required
• Apply quad bike active riding techniques to pre-position the operators body to assist bike stability
• Identify and avoid riding surfaces, terrains and slopes that are dangerous to safe operation
• Operate and maneuver over a variety of surfaces, slopes and terrain safely
• Modify quad bike operation according to local weather conditions

3. Complete quad bike operation

• Shut down quad bike
• Park up and secure quad bike in line with workplace practices
• Identify and report malfunctions, faults, irregular performance or damage to supervisor
• Remove and store keys in the required location
• Unload, load and secure quad bike safely

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate first attack firefighting equipment. It includes demonstrating and explaining to clients how to correctly and safely use portable fire extinguishers, fire hose reels and fire blankets in emergency situations.

The unit is suitable for those with basic skills and knowledge undertaking routine work tasks under the direction of more experienced workers.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in some states and territories. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.

Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct fire team operations, including fighting and containing fires.

This unit applies to those working in site-based roles in the coal mining, metalliferous mining, drilling, extractive, and civil infrastructure environments.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for fire team operations

• Receive, document, clarify and confirm notification of fire operations from appropriate authority
• Access, interpret and apply fire team operations documentation and procedures
• Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
• Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess risks, and implement control measures in line with workplace procedures
• Identify and confirm each team member’s role and responsibilities
• Implement appropriate communication methods to be used during fire fighting or containment in line with workplace procedures
• Locate, select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
• Identify and select required firefighting appliances and confirm their applications

2. Fight or contain fire

• Move or travel to fire site according to workplace procedures
• Identify and assess type, nature, source and intensity of fire, and communicate details to appropriate authorities
• Identify, select, wear and/or apply appliances and equipment appropriate to fire circumstances
• Monitor conditions in fire area, and modify firefighting techniques or applications to reduce impact of identified and/or potential hazards
• Avoid unnecessary risks to self and other team members
• Apply isolation and evacuation procedures

3. Complete fire team operations

• Water, rake down, and/or apply chemicals to fire area to minimise fire recurrence
• Isolate, barricade, rope off, secure, and monitor fire area
• Clean and inspect appliances and equipment and store in designated location
• Report, record and process appliances and equipment for maintenance and/or repair
• Participate in debriefs
• Complete and file documentation, and distribute according to workplace requirements

4. Audit firefighting installations

• Inspect and check each fire board, depot, substation and station’s firefighting installations and appliances
• Identify, clarify and confirm location and range of appliances on premises

Course Description

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to perform a rescue from live low voltage (LV) electrical apparatus in an electricity supply industry (ESI) environment. This does not include overhead lines and underground cables.

It includes the organisational workplace requirements for the inspection and use of live LV panel rescue equipment, and how it applies to ESI workers to meet work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS), mobility and mutual aid requirements.

Note: Those holding an existing ESI or Electrotechnology qualification or equivalent meet the prerequisite unit requirements.

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence/registration to practice in the workplace.

Other conditions may also apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements which must be confirmed prior to commencing this unit.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible to participate in the course you must meet the following entry requirements:

• Minimum 16 years
• Photo ID check
• Basic command of English language
• Must have necessary health and fitness to carry out duties safely

Assessment

Assessments both theory and practical will be explained to students at the commencement of the course and conducted throughout the course duration. 

Some examples of assessment will be group participation, theory questions, work type activities and practical demonstrations and observations.

• Signed agreement to train on site
• All necessary equipment on Jenagar Pty Ltd’s equipment list available and in good condition
• Training room with tables, chairs and screen (or blank wall for a projector)
